Date:2024-04-02

From March 29 to 31, the "Venus Evolution and Life Information Search" academic seminar sponsored by the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, the University of Science and Technology of China and the National Space Administration's Deep Space Exploration Innovation Center was successfully held in Hefei, kicking off a series of themed seminars on the "Search for Extraterrestrial life". The conference focused on the search for traces of life on Venus, and carried out in-depth exchanges and discussions on cutting-edge scientific issues and engineering and technical issues in the exploration. The meeting was presided over by President Wang Yuming, Xu Chengran, Deputy Secretary of the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, and Cheng Huihong, director of the Earth Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation, respectively delivered opening speeches, Academician Hou Zengqian, Chief scientist of China's planetary exploration project, and Liu Jizhong, Chief engineer of the Tiwen 3 Mars sampling return mission, made special invited reports. More than 120 representatives from more than 20 institutions including Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, First, third, fifth and Eighth Academy of Astronautics, Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Space Science Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Hong Kong, Macao University of Science and Technology attended the conference.

The search for extraterrestrial life has always been one of the core contents of deep space exploration. After decades of development, it is at a key node from quantitative change to qualitative change. The United States, Europe and Japan have accelerated the implementation of related exploration missions and strive to find traces of life in extraterrestrial life for the first time. China not only listed the search for traces of life on Mars as the first scientific goal of the Tian-3 mission, but also wrote it into the medium - and long-term development strategy of deep space exploration, and the 2024 Chinese government work report also clearly proposed that "opening up new tracks such as quantum technology and life science", and systematically carrying out research on the exploration of extraterrestrial life and the evolution of livable environment is an inevitable trend.

The experts participating in this academic seminar reported on the research status in various fields and the next research plan. Academician Hou Zengqian made a report on the main scientific problems of Venus, Chief Division Liu Jizhong made a report on the Venus exploration project, Tang Chao, a researcher from the first Academy of Aerospace Science, discussed the technical problems of Venus exploration spacecraft, and Professor Li Tao made a report on Venus atmospheric superrotation and atmospheric fluctuation, which aroused heated discussions among experts and scholars present. The participating experts made a total of 13 invitation reports and 8 special reports, and the research content of each reporter caused frequent questions from scholars on the spot and warm exchanges on the spot. Through the exchange and integration of various science, technology and engineering issues, this seminar further condensed consensus, provided theoretical support for planetary exploration, and preheated the “ShuangQing”Forum on the search for extraterrestrial life traces.

At present, the world's new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation are booming, and the country's strategic demand for deep space exploration continues to increase. Under the new situation and new tasks, it is hoped that through this forum meeting, the lunar exploration center, the relevant departments of the laboratory and the Foundation Committee, and the University of Science and Technology of China can strengthen the communication and coordination of various parties, promote the development of the field of extraterrestrial life exploration and the progress of planetary exploration technology, and realize the integrated development of science, technology and engineering.
